Amniocentesis
After learning that my AFP test came back positive and that I have a higher chance of a down syndrome baby, my husband and I had to make the decision to whether or not get an amnio test done. This is a big deal for us because we know there is a chance something could go wrong during the procedure that might hurt the baby or cause a miscarriage. After a little bit of thinking we decided to go ahead with the procedure. We wanted to be as close to 100% sure if there was something wrong with the pregnancy.

When I got home I decided to call the nurse to schedule a level II ultrasound as well as an amniocentesis. We figured that unless the doctors could tell us otherwise, we needed to know the condition of our baby. So the nurse found a parinatal clinic about 20 miles from our place where I could have the level two ultrasound as well as the amniocentesis done at the same time.
My husband and I were scheduled to move out of state for a new job the same week that I had the level II ultrasound and amnio scheduled to be done. On the day of my appointment, the doctor's office called and said my insurance was not active. We knew that we really wanted to go through with this so we did everything we could to get our insurance company to straightened out my benefits. I was currently on Cobra insurance due to my husbands job change and the insucance company had our names messed up in their system. My husband finally got a hold of the manager and told him that it was very important they fix their mistake and add me to the policy. So right before my scheduled appointment, the insurance company was able to add me to he policy and we were on our way to the clinic.
After the big mess with the insurance company, we arrived at a clinic we felt was not very inviting. It was very small and crowded. But we knew that if we wanted to get the level II ultrasound and have a chance of getting the amnio done at the same time that we would have to stay and wait our turn. So we decided to stay, and we were actually one of the last patients that day. The wait was not as long as we thought it was going to be. And before we knew it, the ultrasound technician called us in to get the level two ultrasound performed.
The level two ultrasound was different from the transvaginal ultrasound that I've had earlier in my pregnancy. This time, the transducer was on top of my abdomen and some lotion was smeared on my adomen to make the transducer glide. This was much better than the transvaginal ultrasound. She started checking for the head, limbs, spine, heart, lungs, etc.and taking a computer snap shot of all the baby body parts. The baby parts are measured to check for abnormalities among other things. After she was finished taking pictures of all the body parts, she asked if we wanted to know the sex of our baby where she told us it was a girl. I was very happy as I have always wanted to have a baby girl. It was a great moment for me and my husband to know that we were going to have a baby girl. The ultrasound technician also gave us a few pictures of the ultrasound to take home. She also did not think there was anything that showed up in the level II ultrasound that we needed to be concerned about. But of course if we wanted to be as close to a hundred percent sure, we would still need to have an amnio done. We were relieved to hear the level two ultrasound went well.
