Pregnancy Labor and Delivery - Page 2

labor and delivery
I never knew how I would feel on the day that I was going to deliver until the moment the nurse said I was having my baby that day. I burst into tears, I guess it was tears of joy and fear at the same time. I was nervous and excited to finally meet this little baby girl that I have been carrying around with me for almost nine months. I didn't know how to become a mother to my baby and yet here she is almost out into the world. I became scared to becoming a mom, but there was no turning back now, it was only a matter of hours. I was also scared at the thought of labor and delivery. I have not had any contractions at that point and was not looking forward to the pain I have heard and read so much about. I really didn't know what to do or expect in the final hours to come.

A few minutes later, a new nurse came in and pushed me in a wheelchair to the delivery room. I was given the best room in the unit, or at least I was told. This was the room our child birth class instructor was talking up to be the best room to have during the delivery, so I guess I was lucky. I was given a new nurse who would take care of me pretty much the rest of the time I was in the delivery room. I changed into the hospital outfit but wore an underwear and a pad since I was leaking amniotic fluid. My husband decided to leave shortly after we got settled into the delivery room to get my suitcase and to take care of our dogs for the night. Since my contractions had not started yet and I was only 4cm dilated, they thought it would still be hours before I had my baby.

My OB-GYN doctor happened to be at the hospital that day delivering other babies, so she stopped by my room to see me for a minute. She thought that I would delivery sometime pass midnight since it was only one in the afternoon. She mentioned that if my contractions did not start soon, that I should go ahead and start on pitocin to speed up the contractions. I said I wanted to give it a little more time to kick in on its own. She also said that whenever I would like the epidural that I can just ask for it. But since I wasn't feeling anything, I didn't feel the need for the epidural just yet. A couple of hours later, my doctor peaked into my room again to see how I was doing and suggested I get on pitocin since my contractions had not started on its own. So around three in the afternoon, I was put on pitocin to start my contractions. They also hooked me up on some ivy which was standard procedure.

Shortly after they put me on pitocin, my husband came back with my things. I also had him sneak in some pita chips as I was starving. I didn't eat much the night before and that morning. I was pretty busy doing other things that I didn't get a chance to eat breakfast. And since we went to the hospital around lunch time, I didn't eat anything then either. So while the nurses weren't in my room, I would eat a handful of pita chips. I was told I couldn't have anything until I have delivered, but I didn't think I had enough energy to go that long without eating.

My husband was also hungry since he had not ate any lunch . So he went downstairs to the cafeteria while I was still waiting for my contractions to kick in. And lucky for him, today was the Christmas dinner at the cafeteria. They had quite a bit of good food to choose from. When he returned back from the cafeteria, I was already starting to feel some contractions. Little by little, the contractions would feel worst and worst. At first, I felt like I had to go to the bathroom. I would go and nothing would come out. I can't tell you how many times I got out of bed to sit on the toilet for nothing. Then finally, the nurse said it was normal to feel the pressure which gives the feeling of having diarrhea.

So about every half hour, the nurse would come in and measure my cervix. I was moving right along pretty fast. I was 5cm then 6 cm dilated within no time. The nurse thought I would probably have my baby that evening.
